A não perder o que será decerto um dos eventos nacionais do ano, para developers, designers e fanáticos da Web. É já no próximo dia 6 e 7 de Setembro. Obrigado Webreakstuff.

Our flight was Saturday morning and I managed to encounter Pedro Custódio (who will be speaking at the conference and got the same plane I did) and Alcides Fonseca (who was running late for his plane to Barcelona, to the TechED08). So, we (me and Gastão) arrived around 2 PM and being a bit disoriented, we took the first transport that seemed the right one to take us to the Hostel. Four hours, a MacDonald’s lunch and several means of transportation after, we got to the Meininger City Hostel. It’s pretty cozy and really good considering the cost.

We spent the rest of the weekend discovering Berlin. Saturday night we went to a nice carnival at the Potsdamer Platz, where there was a snow ramp that people could ski their way down in air doughnuts. As for Sunday, we massacred out feet and legs throughout Berlin. We saw the Jüdisches Museum first thing in the morning – and that kept us occupied pretty much the whole morning, it’s an excellent museum and it is quite affordable (€2,50 is the price for students). In the afternoon we checked out the Brandenburger Tor, the Reichstag as well as the Unter den Linden avenue. We ended our afternoon with a nice hot chocolate and cappuccino in the Starbucks (apparently Alcides shared the same experience as we did, as it was out first Starbucks experience) near the Brandenburger Tor.

We took about 30 minutes to get from the hostel to the conference site, not very long. Conferences started around 9 AM, then there was this lunch hour and then some more conferences in the afternoon. I’d like to give particular attention to the presentation Creating Passionate Users, by Kathy Sierra, where she taught us to be more user-centric and always keep in mind a user driven application or service or whatever. She gave an amazing speech and really got the attention of everyone in the room for about 3 hours. Somewhere in the middle of the conference she would give nice tips on books to read, namely:

• Don’t Make Me Think;
• Flow;
• Computers as Theatre.

Finally, after that came the Tim O’Reilly welcome speech, when he began to speak his mind on Web 2.0, what is it, what people think it is and what it should become.

I still haven’t managed to solve the GPB / EUR problem. Here’s the situation: I’ve been charged the conference price in Pounds instead of Euros, as it was supposed to be. And I’ve not been the only one. In fact, today I spoke with Marcos, and he told that his problem has been solved through some heavy mailing pressure with the organization itself. I’m going to try to solve this issue tomorrow.

I’ll be accompanied by a friend of mine, Gastão Cruz, and we will be cruisin’ throughout the city all week. Yeah!

Devo dizer que fiquei extremamente desiludido com a falta de anúncios sobre as conferências durante a LAN. Admito que estive sempre agarradinho ao computador, mas é o que se espera de qualquer participante. Acontece que as conferências sempre ocorreram, mas tiveram lugar numa sala de conferências perto do check-in e não no recinto da LAN. Dentro deste recinto havia sim umas boas colunas e uns microfones que podiam ter sido utilizados para anunciar as conferências à medida que estas iam decorrendo. Acabei por não ir a nenhuma.

Mais um ponto fraco foi a Internet durante a LAN. Supostamente tínhamos uma linha privada da PT, mas a verdade é que a Internet estava lentíssima, com um enorme packet loss. Também a rede interna não facilitava, vi velocidades internas perto dos 50kBps.

Boa notícia, a equipa ESCT (composta por mim, o André Guerreiro e o Pedro Martins) ganhou o 1º prémio do concurso de segurança! Depois de termos estado das 22.30 às 06.00 a tentar ganhar os pontos que eram necessários para o concurso decidimos ir descansar. No dia seguinte anunciaram-nos a vitória e deram um prémio monetário de €100. Nada mau mesmo.

Durante o resto da LAN continuei a colocar fotos no Flickr, podem ir lá ver.

Ontem a caminhada até à cantina não custou nada, deu para passear um pouco pela cidade. Depois disso, deu-se o torneio de Mohaa assim como as eliminatórias de PES6 que foram alvo de alta afluência de participação.

Para hoje, espera-se as tão aguardadas conferências que ontem decidiram não aparecer. Tudo indica que iremos ter o Jono Bacon, gestor da comunidade Ubuntu a nível mundial, o Isaac Clerencia, o Juan José Sánchez, entre outros, a discursar sobre o que sabem mais. Também me parece que o concurso de segurança será hoje, algo pelo que estou um bocado ansioso.

Entretanto vou trabalhar para a faculdade.

Olá a todos! Já estou na aLANtejo 2007 na Universidade de Évora, neste dia tão bonito. Durante o evento irei mandar as fotos para o Flickr, usando a tag alantejo07.

Para já, tivemos net por volta das 15:40 devido a problemas com a PT segundo ouvi dizer. Agora já está tudo bem e a funcionar. O DirectConnect já está a funcionar (porcaria do hashing…) assim como alguns servidores de jogos. Já se encontra um número considerável de participantes no recinto, à volta de 50, com perspectivas a aumentar mais para o fim do dia (devido às aulas e/ou trabalho).

O espaço onde servem as refeições incluídas na LAN Party mudou de sítio e está agora no outro lado da cidade. Não é tão bom para pessoas que não têm veículos para se deslocarem (como eu) mas isso resolve-se facilmente.

O calor faz-se sentir bem aqui dentro da tenda e como tal várias moscas embirram em esbater contra nós, mais logo quando a temperatura baixar a situação já deve estar controlada.

EDIT: Esqueci-me de referir os freebies! Cada participante tem direito a um pack de gifts do BES, SAPO, etc. Ainda oferecem um CD do Alinex, mapa da cidade etc. Café à borla ali no cantinho.

Fora as dificuldades referidas, esta LAN promete bastante diversão e aprendizagem. A ver vamos. Continuem a ler, que continuo a postar!
