The GNU walks another step

GNU

I just got noticed that the third version of the most know free software license is about to be released. The GNU General Public License is a software license created by Richard Stallman back in 1989 to ensure that its licensed products remained free (as in speech, not beer). Since then, the GPL has had many uplifts and amends by hackers, lawyers and philosophers to continue providing programmers the best way to license their applications.

Here’s an e-mail I got from the Free Software Foundation:

On Friday, June 29, at 12 noon (EDT), the Free Software Foundation will
officially release the GNU GPL version 3. Please join us in celebration
as we bring to a close eighteen months of public outreach and comment,
in revision of the world’s most popular free software license.

Beyond the creation of an improved license, the process of drafting
version 3 has helped highlight vital issues for the community of free
software users. This is a moment to thank the thousands who participated
by commenting on the license, and those that represented stakeholders
through the GPLv3 committee process.

Now with the release of GPLv3, we will see new defenses extended to free
software. These defenses will continue the long history of fighting all
efforts to make free software proprietary.

Please join us as we stream live footage of Richard Stallman announcing
GPLv3 from Noon (EDT) at www.fsf.org.

If you are in the Boston area you can also join us at the FSF offices
from 11:30am. Please let us know at <info@fsf.org> if you would like to
attend.

I’m a credited member of the FSF, myself. If you wish to join and support the foundation click here for more information.

Web 2.0: Student Apps

As a good IT College Student of today, I’m always searching for the next best web app to assist me in my life - be that with work, with my finances, or even how to live it. It’s like my next Christmas toy, that I can show to all of my friends and they can see how productive I am. Yeepii. And gets dumped a lot sooner than I expected. Yeepii, nevertheless!

Here’s a little “collage” from Read / Write Web, that I found over at Lifehacker, filled with tools to help us, poor students.
